Nearly every event venue - from convention centers to local parks, churches, and private event spaces - requires a certificate of liability insurance naming them as additional insured before you can use the space. Beyond venue requirements, event insurance protects you personally as the organizer. If a guest trips and breaks an ankle, if a tent collapses on attendees, or if your event damages the venue's property, the liability falls on you as the host. Events with alcohol service carry heightened risk and may require host liquor liability coverage. Special event insurance is surprisingly affordable. A basic wedding or corporate event with 100–200 guests typically costs $150–$300 for liability coverage. Larger events, events with alcohol, or events with cancellation coverage can run $300–$500. Multi-day festivals and events with 500+ attendees cost more based on duration, activities, and risk. Cancellation coverage adds roughly 1–2% of the total non-recoverable event cost. For a $20,000 wedding budget, cancellation coverage might add $200–$400 to the premium. The vast majority of event venues - hotels, convention centers, wineries, parks and recreation facilities, churches, and private event spaces - require proof of liability insurance and additional insured status before they'll finalize your booking. Check your venue contract for the specific requirements. Most venues require $1 million per occurrence in general liability.

If alcohol is served but not sold (typical at weddings and private parties), host liquor liability coverage is usually included or available as an add-on. If alcohol is sold - even at a fundraiser with a cash bar - you may need a separate liquor liability policy. The distinction between served and sold matters for coverage. Yes. Special event policies can often be quoted, bound, and the certificate of insurance issued within the same business day. We handle last-minute requests regularly. Just don't wait until the day of - give us at least 24–48 hours to ensure everything is in order and your venue has the certificate.

It depends on the policy. Many event cancellation policies cover cancellation due to severe weather that makes the event unsafe or impossible - hurricanes, ice storms, flooding. However, most policies exclude cancellation due to ordinary rain or cold weather that simply makes the event less enjoyable. Some policies have a named-storm cutoff, meaning you can't purchase coverage after a storm is already named and approaching. Read the policy terms carefully.

Yes. Caterers, photographers, DJs, florists, rental companies, and other vendors should carry their own general liability insurance. Your event policy covers you as the host - not negligence by professional vendors. Most reputable vendors already carry insurance. You should request certificates of insurance from each vendor and keep them on file. If a vendor causes an injury or damages property, their insurance should respond first.
